LED floodlighting for pickleball courts
As a guide, recreational use calls for an average of 300 lx with a minimum of 200 lx, and the next level up for 500 lx with a minimum of 400 lx. The masts stand beside the courts, where they cause the least glare. A court measures 6.10 × 13.41 m; with several courts side by side, an even distribution matters most.

Side-mounted masts
Masts and floodlights belong at the sides of the courts, where they cause the least glare.
Low mounting height
Mounting heights of 6 to 8 m are often cited, and less for single courts.
The minimum counts
Besides the average, the minimum value on the court also matters.
Converting tennis courts
If you lay out pickleball on a tennis court, the position of the courts changes.
Switching by occupancy
Time programmes and separately switched courts make sure that only occupied courts are lit.

From the side instead of the front
Pickleball is played at close range, and players constantly look along the long axis. Masts at the sides keep the floodlights out of this line of sight. We set the tilt and optics in the lighting calculation for your courts.

Light by playing level
| Average illuminance | Playing level | Lighting class | Uniformity | Glare rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300lx | Recreation and club play, at least 200 lx | |||
| 500lx | Club competition and tournament, at least 400 lx |
What do the values mean?
Lux tells you how much light reaches the pitch. Uniformity shows how evenly it is distributed, and the glare rating how strongly the floodlights cause glare.
MoreLess
Illuminance (lx): How much light falls on a surface. 1 lx equals 1 lumen per square metre. For sports facilities, the average horizontal illuminance on the playing area is usually given.
Uniformity (U): Lowest divided by average illuminance. The closer the value is to 1, the more even the light.
Glare rating (GR): Assesses how strongly floodlights cause glare at outdoor facilities, on a scale from 10 (no glare) to 90 (unbearable glare).
Frequently asked questions
How many lux does a pickleball court need?
As a guide, the simplest category calls for an average of 300 lx with a minimum of 200 lx, the middle one 500 lx with a minimum of 400 lx. The highest category requires 750 lx. All values are maintained values, so the installation must also hold them as it ages.
Where is it measured?
Horizontal illuminance is measured about 90 cm above the court.
Is there a separate standard for pickleball?
The values given here are guide values, not a requirement of a German standard. Also check what your association or municipality specifies.
How big is a pickleball court?
According to the official USA Pickleball rulebook, 6.10 × 13.41 m for singles and doubles. For the lighting calculation we also need the area around the courts and the layout of the courts.
Is existing tennis lighting enough?
That can only be answered by calculation or measurement. The lighting is planned for the position of the tennis court, and new courts are often positioned differently. We check this using the datasheet of the existing floodlights and the site plan.
What applies to light towards the neighbours?
The permit and the local authority regulate this. In Germany, the LAI guidance is the benchmark: in residential areas the guide value for brightening at the window is 3 lx until 10 pm and 1 lx after that. Clarify this early, before the mast positions are fixed.
