LED floodlighting for the driving range

According to DIN EN 12193, the tee of a driving range needs at least 100 lx horizontal at a uniformity of 0.8 and 50 lx vertical. That is only enough for the tee itself: so that golfers can follow the ball's flight path, floodlights must also light the range, for example with 10 lx vertical up to 150 m.

What matters on the driving range

  • Tee bright and uniform

At the tee, the standard requires 100 lx horizontal at a uniformity of 0.8.

  • Making the flight path visible

If only the tee is lit, you cannot see the ball fly.

  • High-flying balls

In golf, light must also radiate upwards so that high balls remain visible.

  • Only the range, not the course

Nine- and 18-hole courses are rarely lit completely.

Glare

Light in the flight path, not in the eyes

From the tee, golfers look for a long time in the direction the ball flies. We set the position and tilt of the floodlights so that they light the range without causing glare in that line of sight.

What do the values mean?

Lux tells you how much light reaches the pitch. Uniformity shows how evenly it is distributed, and the glare rating how strongly the floodlights cause glare.

MoreLess

Illuminance (lx): How much light falls on a surface. 1 lx equals 1 lumen per square metre. For sports facilities, the average horizontal illuminance on the playing area is usually given.

Uniformity (U): Lowest divided by average illuminance. The closer the value is to 1, the more even the light.

Glare rating (GR): Assesses how strongly floodlights cause glare at outdoor facilities, on a scale from 10 (no glare) to 90 (unbearable glare).

Frequently asked questions

How many lux does a driving range need?

According to DIN EN 12193, at the tee at least 100 lx horizontal at a uniformity of 0.8 and 50 lx vertical. For the flight path, licht.wissen 08 gives as an example 10 lx vertical, one metre above the ground, up to 150 m.

Is it enough to light only the tee bays?

For the stroke, yes, but not for practice: without light in the range, the ball's flight path cannot be followed.

How many masts does a driving range need?

That is only determined by the lighting calculation for your facility. A standard lighting plan from Philips for the Netherlands uses five masts and ten floodlights at 11 and 12 m, for 100 lx at the tee and 50 lx vertical at 200 m.
