LED lighting for sports halls and school gymnasiums

For school sport and club training, DIN EN 12193 applies lighting Class III: 200 lx for ball sports and gymnastics, 300 lx for badminton, hockey and table tennis. Single, double and triple halls differ mainly in how many hall sections are used individually. Switching per hall section therefore belongs in the planning from the start.

What matters for schools and clubs

  • Switching by hall section

If the hall is divided by dividing curtains, the light only needs to be on in the section in use.

  • Glare in every direction of play

In divisible halls the direction of play turns by 90 degrees, so the luminaires should be glare-controlled from all viewing directions.

  • Levels by use

One level for school sport and a higher one for training or competition saves energy.

  • Use daylight too

For school sport, daylight is often enough, so the artificial light does not need to run at full level.

  • Ball-impact resistant

Our Series 07 high-bay luminaires are ball-impact resistant.

Glare

Glare when looking up

For volleyball, no luminaires should hang directly above the court, and for basketball none within 4 m of the baskets. In a divisible hall, the rotated direction of play is added.

What do the values mean?

Lux tells you how much light reaches the pitch. Uniformity shows how evenly it is distributed, and the glare rating how strongly the floodlights cause glare.

MoreLess

Illuminance (lx): How much light falls on a surface. 1 lx equals 1 lumen per square metre. For sports facilities, the average horizontal illuminance on the playing area is usually given.

Uniformity (U): Lowest divided by average illuminance. The closer the value is to 1, the more even the light.

Glare rating (GR): Assesses how strongly floodlights cause glare at outdoor facilities, on a scale from 10 (no glare) to 90 (unbearable glare).

Frequently asked questions

How many lux does a school gymnasium need?

Under DIN EN 12193, in Class III it is 200 lx for ball sports and gymnastics and 300 lx for badminton, hockey and table tennis. The deciding sport is the one with the highest visual demands. If you also host club competitions, plan the higher level from the start.

What are the dimensions of single, double and triple halls?

Under DIN 18032-1, the usual sizes are 15 × 27 m at 5.5 m height for the single hall, 22 × 44 m at 7 m height for the double hall and 27 × 45 m at 7 m height for the triple hall, divisible into three parts of 15 × 27 m each. Deviations are possible depending on state and location.

How does it differ from the multi-purpose hall?

Multi-purpose halls are also used for events and are lit in a more elaborate way, for example with additional lighting systems and scenes. A sports hall for school and club mainly needs good general lighting, levels and switching per hall section.

Do the luminaires have to be ball-impact resistant?

licht.de calls for this in sports halls, and the VBG checklist for sports halls asks about it. DIN standards are voluntary in principle and become binding through a contract. Specify the requirement in the tender and contract. Our Series 07 high-bay luminaires are ball-impact resistant.

What should be considered when retrofitting an old hall?

Clarify hall sections, levels and emergency lighting early. In a municipal retrofit in Dassel, the emergency lighting was built into the old luminaires and was added alongside the LED high-bay luminaires when they were replaced. There, the new luminaires fitted into the existing ceiling openings, and the ceiling elements were adapted.
