LED floodlighting for beach volleyball courts

As a guide, an average of 75 lx applies to school, club and leisure use on the beach court, and 200 lx to regional competitions and performance training. The court measures 16 × 8 m, plus a free zone of at least 3 m. The masts stand outside this zone, and the floodlights stay out of the line of sight to high balls where possible.

What the beach court demands

  • Looking at high balls

When looking at high balls, light from above is particularly disturbing.

  • Free zone stays free

Around the court there is a free zone of at least 3 m, with at least 7 m of free space above.

  • Mounting height

A published lighting expert report for two beach courts at a school assumes a mounting height of 8 m. The suitable height comes from the lighting calculation for your courts.

  • Lines in the sand

The court lines are 5 cm wide bands that must stand out clearly from the sand.

  • Switching by occupancy

Time programmes and separately switched courts ensure that only occupied courts are lit.

Glare

The ball comes from above

When setting, digging and attacking, the eyes keep going upwards. We set the mast position, tilt and optics so that the floodlights lie as far as possible outside the field of view onto the ball.

What do the values mean?

Lux tells you how much light reaches the pitch. Uniformity shows how evenly it is distributed, and the glare rating how strongly the floodlights cause glare.

MoreLess

Illuminance (lx): How much light falls on a surface. 1 lx equals 1 lumen per square metre. For sports facilities, the average horizontal illuminance on the playing area is usually given.

Uniformity (U): Lowest divided by average illuminance. The closer the value is to 1, the more even the light.

Glare rating (GR): Assesses how strongly floodlights cause glare at outdoor facilities, on a scale from 10 (no glare) to 90 (unbearable glare).

Frequently asked questions

How many lux does a beach volleyball court need?

For school, club, training and leisure, 75 lx at a uniformity of 0.5. For regional competitions and performance training, 200 lx at 0.6, and for national competitions 500 lx at 0.7.

How large is the lit area?

Under the FIVB rules, the court measures 16 × 8 m, with a free zone all round of at least 3 m. For one court, that gives a playing area of at least 22 × 14 m on which people play and run.

How tall do the masts have to be?

We are not aware of a fixed requirement. A published lighting expert report for two beach courts at a school calculates indicatively with 8 m above the court. According to the FIVB, at least 7 m must remain free above the court.

How should a new court be oriented?

For outdoor fields, a longitudinal axis running north-south is recommended, with deviations between north-north-east and north-north-west.

What does the FIVB require?

For FIVB, world and official competitions at night, the rules give 1,000 to 1,500 lx, measured 1 m above the sand. This is not the benchmark for club facilities.

What applies to light towards the neighbours?

The permit and the local authority regulate this. In Germany, the LAI guidance is the benchmark: in residential areas the guide value for brightening at the window is 3 lx until 10 pm and 1 lx after that. Clarify this early, before the mast positions are fixed.
