LED floodlighting for baseball
Baseball needs more light than football, because the ball is small and fast. DIN EN 12193 distinguishes between infield and outfield: for training and recreation, 300 lx in the infield and 200 lx in the outfield apply; for competitions at medium level, 500 and 300 lx.

Two areas, two values
Most of the action happens in the infield, with the catcher and the batter.
Brighter than football
In training it is 300 lx in the infield compared with 75 lx on a football pitch, because the small ball places higher demands on vision.
Even infield
In Classes I and II, the uniformity in the infield should not fall below 0.7.
High balls
Light must also be emitted upwards so that high-flying balls remain visible.

Keeping the ball in view
Batters and fielders follow the ball from changing directions and often far upwards. We set mast height, tilt and optics so that as few floodlights as possible lie in these lines of sight.

Light by playing level
| Average illuminance | Playing level | Lighting class | Uniformity | Glare rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300lx | Training, recreation | Class III | U 0.5 | GR ≤ 55 |
| 500lx | Competitions at medium level | Class II | U 0.7 | GR ≤ 50 |
| 750lx | High-performance sport | Class I | U 0.7 | GR ≤ 50 |
What do the values mean?
Lux tells you how much light reaches the pitch. Uniformity shows how evenly it is distributed, and the glare rating how strongly the floodlights cause glare.
MoreLess
Illuminance (lx): How much light falls on a surface. 1 lx equals 1 lumen per square metre. For sports facilities, the average horizontal illuminance on the playing area is usually given.
Uniformity (U): Lowest divided by average illuminance. The closer the value is to 1, the more even the light.
Glare rating (GR): Assesses how strongly floodlights cause glare at outdoor facilities, on a scale from 10 (no glare) to 90 (unbearable glare).
Frequently asked questions
How many lux does a baseball field need?
Under DIN EN 12193, 300 lx in the infield and 200 lx in the outfield for training and recreation, 500 and 300 lx for competitions at medium level, and 750 and 500 lx in high-performance sport.
