LED lighting for minigolf courses

DIN EN 12193 does not cover miniature golf. Because ball size and the playing task are similar, licht.wissen 08 says the values for boccia can be transferred: 50 lx for leisure use, 100 and 200 lx for competitions. Low mast-mounted luminaires and bollard luminaires that direct the light onto the lane without glare are suitable.

What matters on a minigolf course

  • Low luminaires

Mast-mounted luminaires with a low mounting height and bollard luminaires are sensible, close to the lanes, which are six to twelve metres long.

  • Well shielded

The luminaires should direct the light onto the lane and not dazzle the players, as they stand right next to them.

  • Think about the paths

In sprawling facilities, additional path luminaires light the areas between the lanes.

  • Playing in the evening

Minigolf is often played in the dark too, both as leisure and as a competitive sport.

Glare

Light onto the lane, not into the face

Players on minigolf courses stand close to the luminaires and look down at the lane. Low, well-shielded luminaires therefore matter.

What do the values mean?

Lux tells you how much light reaches the pitch. Uniformity shows how evenly it is distributed, and the glare rating how strongly the floodlights cause glare.

MoreLess

Illuminance (lx): How much light falls on a surface. 1 lx equals 1 lumen per square metre. For sports facilities, the average horizontal illuminance on the playing area is usually given.

Uniformity (U): Lowest divided by average illuminance. The closer the value is to 1, the more even the light.

Glare rating (GR): Assesses how strongly floodlights cause glare at outdoor facilities, on a scale from 10 (no glare) to 90 (unbearable glare).

Frequently asked questions

How many lux does a minigolf course need?

DIN EN 12193 gives no separate value. licht.wissen 08 transfers the values for boccia: 50 lx at a uniformity of 0.5 for leisure, 100 lx at 0.7 for competitions at a medium level, 200 lx at 0.7 in high-performance sport.

Which luminaires suit minigolf?

Mast-mounted luminaires with a low mounting height and bollard luminaires are recommended. We clarify which luminaire suits your facility in the individual case.

Do the paths also have to be lit?

In sprawling facilities, additional path luminaires help so that the areas between the lanes do not stay dark.
