Hockey floodlighting for Regionalliga, Oberliga and Verbandsliga

For all divisions below the 2. Bundesliga, that is Regionalliga, Oberliga and Verbandsliga, the Deutscher Hockey-Bund sets lighting class III: an average of at least 200 lx, a uniformity of at least 0.7 and glare below GR 55. Matches with official TV broadcasts require lighting class II with 300 lx and GR below 50. The guideline also requires a lighting plan, an acceptance report and repeat tests.

Overview by division

The values for match play come from the DHB floodlighting guideline. It applies to planning, conversion and new construction. Regional special arrangements are possible after consultation with the DHB.

lx = average horizontal illuminance (except Ecam), U = uniformity (Emin/Em), GR = Blendungsbewertung. Your association's regulations take precedence.

What do the values mean?

Lux tells you how much light reaches the pitch. Uniformity shows how evenly it is distributed, and the glare rating how strongly the floodlights cause glare.

MoreLess

Illuminance (lx): How much light falls on a surface. 1 lx equals 1 lumen per square metre. For sports facilities, the average horizontal illuminance on the playing area is usually given.

Uniformity (U): Lowest divided by average illuminance. The closer the value is to 1, the more even the light.

Glare rating (GR): Assesses how strongly floodlights cause glare at outdoor facilities, on a scale from 10 (no glare) to 90 (unbearable glare).

All terms in the glossary

Regionalliga, Oberliga and Verbandsliga: 200 lx

The DHB floodlighting guideline assigns all divisions below the 2. Bundesliga to lighting class III. New systems or systems converted to LED need an average of at least 200 lx on the pitch, a uniformity of 0.7 and a glare rating below GR 55. Calculations use a maintenance factor of 0.90.

As a reference system, the DHB names four masts for 200 lx and six masts for 300 lx. It can recommend both, but neither is a condition for approval of the system.

For hockey pitches with few masts, the STL1443 is usually the right choice, as its modules can be aimed individually.

Matches with official TV broadcasts: 300 lx

As soon as a match is officially broadcast on television, lighting class II applies: at least 300 lx, uniformity 0.7, glare below GR 50. The technical publication licht.wissen 08 gives 200 lx for Class II in hockey, so the DHB requires more here.

Anyone who wants to move up to the 2. Bundesliga or plans broadcasts is best advised to settle the design before construction. The guideline reserves lighting class I for international tournaments.

Documentation, testing and existing systems

For every floodlight system the guideline requires a lighting plan with isolux diagrams and proof of the lighting values. For new systems and conversions, an acceptance report from an independent specialist company is also required. Repeat tests are due every four years.

Systems that have not yet been converted to LED must meet the same minimum values. They may continue to operate if a specialist company inspects them annually with a calibrated measuring system and documents this.

We calculate the lighting plan with the luminaire data of the chosen floodlight.

Youth hockey under floodlights

The DHB rules of play allow championship matches under artificial lighting (§ 28(4)). They give no lux value, and neither do the youth regulations.

The floodlighting guideline applies to official evening matches within the DHB and lists only Regionalliga, Oberliga and Verbandsliga as examples. Ask your regional association if mainly youth matches take place at your facility.

Training and light levels

For training, the guideline gives no separate value. For outdoor hockey, the technical publication licht.wissen 08 lists 200 lx at a uniformity of 0.7, also in Class III.

The DHB recommends dimmable LED luminaires so that the light can be adapted to training. The STL963 and STL1443 floodlights can be dimmed via 0–10 V.

Colour temperature and neighbourhood

The DHB recommends at least 4000 K. For funding under the Kommunalrichtlinie, sports facilities are in principle limited to 3000 K at most, in exceptional cases up to 4000 K if the sport requires it. Clarify the colour temperature before the application. Our floodlights are available in 3000 and 4000 K, Series 12 also in 5000 K.

According to the guideline, light outside the playing area must comply with the requirements of the LAI and the Bundes-Immissionsschutzgesetz. To protect adjacent residential areas, the DHB recommends glare protection such as shielding.

Frequently asked questions

How many lux does the hockey Regionalliga need?

The DHB sets lighting class III for Regionalliga, Oberliga and Verbandsliga: at least 200 lx, uniformity 0.7, glare below GR 55. For official TV broadcasts it is 300 lx and GR below 50.

Does a hockey floodlight system have to be tested?

Yes, according to the DHB guideline. New systems and conversions need an acceptance report from an independent specialist company, and repeat tests are due every four years. Existing systems without LED are tested annually.

May an old system without LED continue to operate?

Yes, if it achieves the same minimum values and is tested annually by a specialist company with a calibrated measuring system. The result must be documented.

Which colour temperature does the DHB recommend?

At least 4000 K. Anyone seeking funding through the Kommunalrichtlinie should clarify this beforehand, as sports facilities there are in principle limited to 3000 K at most and in exceptional cases up to 4000 K.
